From time to time, we are asked whether infant formulas contain processed free glutamic acid (MSG) and processed free aspartic acid – both neurotoxins, particularly toxic to the vulnerable nervous system of the infant.

Results of analyses of five formulas purchased in Canada are shown in Table 1. Brands are listed in alphabetical order. Ingredients of products sold in the United States and other countries may vary. The manufacturer of Enfalac sold in Canada uses the product name Enfamil in the United States.

Kasus Keracunan Makanan

Kasus keracunan makanan bukan hal yang asing bagi kita. Berbagai media, baik cetak maupun elektronik,  kerap memberitakannya.

Sekretaris Dirjen Pemberantasan Penyakit Menular dan Penyehatan Lingkungan Depkes dan Kesos, dr. I Nyoman Kandun MPH, mengungkapkan dalam harian Kompas bahwa selama kurun waktu tahun 1989 – 2000 saja, terdapat 400 laporan kejadian penyakit akibat makanan dengan 25.908 orang korban meliputi:

  • keracunan tempe bongkrek (1990),
  • biskuit beracun (1995),
  • mie instan beracun (1996),
  • keracunan makanan tambahan pada ank sekolah di Lampung (1997),
  • keracunan makanan di Bali (1997).

Saya anjurkan Anda untuk mengikuti langkah-langkah prefentif menangkal timbulnya batu ginjal. Yah, tip paling utama adalah: minumlah air (yang baik kualitasnya) sebanyak-banyaknya setiap hari dan jangan membiasakan diri ‘ngempet pipis’.

Penyebab Keracunan Makanan

1) Pangan diolah dengan menggunakan bahan baku yang tidak aman, misalnya dari:

  • ikan dan hasil laut dari perairan tercemar.
  • sayur dan buah yang tercemar pestisida atau dari lingkungan yang tercemar.

2) Pendinginan pangan yang tdak sempurna dan penurunan suhu hingga suhu aman (kurang dari 5 drajat Celcius) dilakukan terlalu lama.

Keracunan Dianggap Lumrah

Kasus keracunan merupakan hal yang lumrah kita dengar di negeri ini. Mengapa hal ini sering terjadi?

Banyak faktor yang memengaruhinya. Diantaranya, adalah fakta bahwa di Indonesia sumber racun yang dapat mencemari makanan kita begitu banyak terutama untuk sumber racun yang berasal dari mikroorganisme yang sangat mudah tumbuh di negeri tropis semacam Indonesia.

Faktor lain yang mengakibatkan banyaknya kasus keracunan di Indonesia adalah kewaspadaan kita sebagai konsuman tampaknya sangat kurang. Coba saja kita lihat pola hidup masyarakat kita. Kebanyakan kita tidak segan-segan jajan di pinggir jalan yang ramai oleh kendaraan, tambahan lagi juga dikepung oleh debu yang beterbangan. Continue reading

Makan-Minum Sembarangan: Bisa Gagal Ginjal

Sekitar seminggu yang lalu, anak lak-laki kawan saya di Kepanjen (Kabupaten Malang) meninggal dunia dalam usia yang masih muda, 25 tahun, yang disebabkan oleh gagal ginjal yang telah dideritanya selama satu tahun. Setelah selama satu tahun menjalani cuci darah (dialysis), kondisi kesehatannya tak tertolong lagi.

Jelaslah di sini bahwa penyakit yang fatal seperti gagal ginjal dan stroke pun kini tak segan-segan menyerang orang-orang dengan usia yang masih muda, bahkan anak-anak sekalipun. Jadi, mentang-mentang masih muda, janganlah membiasakan diri menemppuh gaya hidup, terutama soal makan-minum, yang sembarangan atau sembrono (ceroboh). Lebih parah lagi bila diiringi dengan merokok dan/atau minuman keras;  sakit apa lagi yang mau dicari?

Common Forms of Property Ownership

There are a variety of forms of ownership of property. The more common forms of ownership include:

1) Joint Tenancy: property owned by two or more people at the same time in equal shares; typically referred to as the four unities (unity of time, title, interest and possession vesting in each joint tenant). Each joint tenant has an undivided right to possess the whole property and a proportionate right of equal ownership interest. When one joint tenant dies, his/her interest automatically vests in the surviving joint tenant(s) by operation of law. Words in the deed such as “John and Mary, as joint tenants with right of survivorship and not as tenants in common” establishes title in joint tenancy. Not all the states allow this form of property ownership.
